Team C (Richard) vs Team D (John W) 14th December 2021

Thirds League

Well, what an eventful game that was!  A win for Team Waterlow but in difficult circumstances for Team Willson.

There was a brief hiatus before the start when, once again, all five members of Team D turned up to play (we have a rota that was drawn up by regular skip Alice, but substitutions have tended to confuse). Once sorted, the rink was skipped by John W for this, the last of the team’s Thirds games.  Alice was in lead, Steve was playing a particularly relaxed second (he had been to a lunchtime Christmas gathering) and Kay was at third.

Richard’s crew were David (Deemo) Morrison leading, Dee playing second and James third.  Unfortunately though this order was not to last very long.

At the first end, Team Willson looked to be off to a promising start with a clutch of stones in the house.  However, after Richard’s final stone, John was still left with the possibility of a draw into the centre of the house and managed to pull it off.  One up to Team Waterlow.

Then just as he started to help clear the stones, Deemo tripped and took a worryingly heavy fall on the ice.  Even before those present could help him to his feet, Murrayfield’s attentive ice-men were in attendance.  It quickly became apparent that with the amount of blood flowing from a bad cut on his head, David would be taking no further part in the action that night.

With David upstairs and in safe hands, play resumed.  With Team Willson perhaps struggling to adapt to their changed setup , the second and third ends went to Team Waterlow by one and two stones respectively.  However, Team Willson came good in the fourth end to open their account with a single.

Unfortunately though, that was it for Team Willson and unable to repeat the strong form of their previous two Thirds games, they failed to make any further scores.   It wasn’t for the want of trying though as throughout the game they were getting stones in the house – it was just that Team Waterlow had without doubt hit a purple patch and found their draws and guards to be working well.
