For the final league game of the 21/22 Holyrood CC season, it was teams A v B.
Dougie’s team A was without Ken and Team B was without John MacC due to Covid, so two super-subs were fielded with John Waterlow and Deemo respectively, both playing at second. Dougie had Gill at lead and Colin at third, while Rob at skip had Fiona at lead and Billy at third.
Team A were comfortably second in the table, but for team B at stake was the wooden spoon, since they lay fourth in the table (i.e. bottom) by just a single point behind team D (and strangely with both team B and D having an identical overall points difference of – 31).
The first four ends each saw a single point scored alternately with the hammer. There was good tight play, with Dougie twice having to do a good final save draw against pressure and one end requiring the measure to separate a tight threesome on the button. Everyone was playing well, with Fiona and Gill both laying good openers and the number twos having their own running duel with some great hitting and laying.
In the fifth end Team B grabbed a steal of two, and then were quite well placed in the fifth until Dougie’s final stone managed a double takeout to snatch a whole three from left field! Suddenly it was 4-5 to A with only time for one end left, but B would at least have the hammer.
Again a good mix developed of guard stones and several in the house. Team B had one stone narrowly counting when Dougie threw his last, which didn’t dislodge it. So a tie then? Rob’s last went well, needed some sweeping to avoid a guard to its right, then needed to curl to avoid a blue on its left and to not dislodge the counter, and then got to nudge onto a back blue, to rest successfully for the two. So 6 – 5 to finish, wooden spoon avoided, and a quality game to complete the season. Rob.
