Team B (John Mac) vs Team D (John W) 12th December 2023

Revenge is Sweet

Our first encounter of the season with Team MacCornerkickey had ended in an ignominious defeat (see the post for 15th November – as reported by the losing skip!).  So this was our chance to make amends – and with the team firing on all cylinders, we took it, scoring the same number of stones that we were vanquished by last time.

With Superlub up north, Team MacConnachie were short a player but, as ever, Supersub Bob was available to stand in at short notice.  Team Waterlow had a full complement of players – Steve Laux was on stand-down so it was Dave D at lead, Kay second and the Dougie as the skip’s wingman.

Team W got off to a confident start as the first end progressed – or so we thought.  By the time we had completed our deliveries we had built up two or three scoring stones which were well protected by quite a lot of granite of various colours up front.  A slam-dunk surely?  But having lost the toss, MacCornerkickey had last stone – always dangerous.  Sure enough, with plans A, B and no doubt C in mind, John sent his stone down and once again slipped through a gap that didn’t exist.  One up to Team MacConnachie.

But then came the pivotal second end which was to set us up for the game.  Dave D was dropping stones in the house; Kay was clearing opposition stones with deadly accuracy while Dougie was equally adept at both take-out and guard.  This time, John Mac could do nothing about it – four up and with last stone, it was very satisfying to draw another one in for a five.

The third end was close fought but went our way too, leaving the score at seven against just one. Surely Team MacConnachie were on the ropes?  But no, they  remained defiant and over the next two ends nibbled away at our lead with a two and then a single.  The details are hazy but I do seem to recall another MacCornerkickey special with a fine tap-up into the house.

So it was 7 – 4 going into the sixth end.  Were we worried?  Well, yes, perhaps a little bit, but we didn’t let it put us off our stride.  Everyone was working well and Team MacConnachie were scrabbling for answers to questions they hadn’t asked.  We scored a two in the sixth end followed by the coup-de-grace, a three in the seventh.  A performance for Team D to be proud of.

John.
