Rinks : ‘D’ Maverick v. ‘C’ Deemo
‘Match 6 of 15 in the Main League for Deemo!’
On arrival at the rink the changing room was alive with only himself ( Deemo ). Where were the rest of the squad? A quick trot upstairs did nothing to allay my fears that I had a wrong time/date in my diary. Then, as if to settle my nerves, I was joined by Super Lube and Sweet Chariot. My rink nearly complete we were then joined by opponents Maverick, Hoss & Blue. Still with two missing, we girded our loins and headed to the ice pad. Phew, we were just about to complete the customary handshakes when in walked Snudge and Round them Up – traffic had been horrendous but they struggled through and made it – we were complete and battle could commence.
Rink ‘D’ won the toss and Maverick allowed rink Deemo the pleasure of testing the ice first. The first end concluded with Maverick taking a single shot. Deemo was still to settle but, with last stone in the second end, was confident his band of stalwarts with Super Lube supervising the final two stones, pulling back one shot was well within their grasp!!! Unfortunately Deemo’s last stone fell six inches short (or so it was reported) after a mix of calls to ‘sweep’ and ‘not to sweep’. The end fell to Maverick who counted another single. This was quickly followed up with Maverick scoring a further two shots against the hammer at the third end – were the wheels coming off rink Deemo’s wagon?
The fourth end saw a scatter of stones round the head for rink Deemo and with Maverick unable to take out any shot stones Deemo relaxed a little with a score of four and now the rinks were even again.
End five saw Maverick take another shot with the hammer to edge into the lead again but the ensuing sixth end saw rink Deemo fight back to count a crucial three shots and go two up over all.
With one eye on the time clock it was apparent that we would only have time for one more end – for rink Deemo that meant trying to minimise Maverick’s opportunity to score two shots or more whilst having last stone advantage (the hammer). With last stones to play the thirds were on edge and looking at angles, taking slide rule readings, measuring cross winds, etc., to gain the upper hand. To be perfectly honest the last end was a bit of a blur – was Maverick’s rink lying one shot with last stone to play? I cannot rightly remember but that is how it ended, rink Maverick scoring a single shot to go down to the score of 7 shots to 6.
Close it might have been in shots but Rink Maverick took 5 ends as opposed to rink Deemo’s 2!!!! In motoring terms, when ‘big ends’ go it can end up costing you severely.
Onwards and upwards was the cry while we enjoyed our after game refreshment whilst contemplating our next matches. .
Bye for now.
Deemo
